Different people consume content differently. Younger shoppers are on Reels. Older audiences often click from Facebook Feed. Stories get scroll-stoppers. Rule 4: Turn On Advantage+ Placements

This is one of the most common mistakes U.S. ecommerce advertisers make. They restrict their ads to “Instagram only” or “Facebook Feed only” — because they had a bad experience with Audience Network or saw high CPMs on Stories.

That’s outdated logic. When you restrict placements, you cut the algorithm off from cheaper inventory it could use to deliver your result at lower cost.

The Learning Phase: What Nobody Tells You

You’ve probably seen “Learning” or “Learning Limited” in your Ads Manager and thought something was wrong. Here’s what it actually means — and why the most expensive mistake most store owners make is editing their ads before the learning phase is done.

Let’s use an analogy. Imagine you hire a brand new sales rep. On their first day, you put them on the phone with customers. They stumble. They don’t know the product perfectly. They don’t know which pitch works for which type of customer. Their close rate is low and their calls are expensive.

But by week two, they’re learning. By week four, they know exactly which opener works with which type of customer, how to handle objections, when to push and when to back off. Their performance stabilizes. It looks predictable.

Then on day five of the new job, you change their entire script. Now they’re confused again. Back to square one.

That’s exactly what happens when you edit your ads before the learning phase is complete.

What the Learning Phase Actually Is

Every time you create a new ad set — or make a significant edit to an existing one — Meta’s delivery system enters a learning phase. During this time, the algorithm is actively experimenting: showing your ad to different users at different times on different placements, gathering data on who responds and who doesn’t.

According to Meta’s official documentation, the learning phase officially ends when an ad set generates approximately 50 optimization events within a 7-day period. An optimization event is whatever you’re optimizing for — a purchase, an Add to Cart, a lead form submission, a video view.

Until those 50 events happen, performance is unstable and often looks worse than it will eventually be. CPAs are higher. Delivery is inconsistent. The algorithm is making educated guesses rather than data-backed decisions.

The “Learning Limited” Status — It’s NOT a Penalty

When your ad set shows “Learning Limited” in Ads Manager, most people panic and either pause the ad or change something. Both are the wrong response.

“Learning Limited” simply means your ad set didn’t generate enough optimization events to fully exit the learning phase. It’s a signal, not a punishment. And it almost always has one of these root causes:
